The Enneagram

The Enneagram is a powerful model of personality and character structure, much like the Myers-Briggs. However, the Enneagram goes much deeper into the human psyche.

We can do a lot of work on our psychology, but deep, sustainable change comes from an awareness of our character structure – and this is where the Enneagram becomes a valuable tool for personal growth.

I am one of the first Enneagram teachers certified by one of the earliest and well-known teachers of the Enneagram, Helen Palmer, and have been using it in my practice for 20+ years.

The Enneagram has nine personality types, each with a distinct, well-developed coping strategy for relating to self, others and the world.

If you know your Enneagram type, you can clearly see what motivates you as you move in the world, and with this awareness you will be able to make more conscious choices for yourself.

A good book to start learning about the Enneagram is The Enneagram Made Easy: Discover the 9 Types of People by Renee Baron and Elizabeth Wagele. And if you have children, check out The Enneagram of Parenting by the same authors.

Any book by Helen Palmer will also be excellent, and I recommend you start with The Enneagram: Understanding Yourself and the Others In Your Life.

If you want to delve further, these books have been a constant on my bookshelf:

  • The Complete Enneagram by Beatrice Chestnut

  • The Essential Enneagram: The Definitive Personality Test and Self-Discovery Guide by David N. Daniels and Virginia A. Price

  • The Spiritual Dimensions of the Enneagram: Nine Faces of the Soul by Sandra Maitri

  • Ennea-type Structures : Self-Analysis for the Seeker by Claudio Naranjo
